ವೆಂಕಟಪ್ಪ ಗ್ಯಾಲರಿ ದುರವಸ್ಥೆಗೆ ಹೊಣೆ ಯಾರು?

‘ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಕ್ಷಮಿಸಿ ಬಿಡಿ, ವೆಂಕಟಪ್ಪನವರೆ, ಹೆಬ್ಬಾರ್ ಅವರೇ… ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಕ್ಷಮಿಸಿ’! ಬಹಳ ಸಂಕಟ, ನೋವಿನಿಂದ ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ.

ಹೌದು, ಇದನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಇನ್ನೇನು ಮಾಡಲಾದೀತು ಅನಿಸಲಾರಂಭಿಸಿದೆ. ವೆಂಕಟಪ್ಪ ಚಿತ್ರಶಾಲೆ (ವೆಂಕಟಪ್ಪ ಆರ್ಟ್ ಗ್ಯಾಲರಿ) ನವೀಕರಣವಾಗಿ, ಕಲಾವಿದರ ಅನುಪಸ್ಥಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಉದ್ಘಾಟನೆಯೂ ಆಗಿ ಎರಡುವರೆ ತಿಂಗಳುಗಳೇ ಕಳೆದಿವೆ. ಇನ್ನೇನು ಹತ್ತು ದಿನ ಕಳೆದರೆ 3 ತಿಂಗಳು. ಅತ್ಯಂತ ನೋವಿನ ಸಂಗತಿ ಏನೆಂದರೆ, ಇಲ್ಲೀಗ ಪ್ರದರ್ಶಿಸಲಾದ, ಸಂಗ್ರಹದ ಅನೇಕ ಕಲಾಕೃತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿಲೀಂದ್ರಗಳು (Fungus) ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಲಕ್ಷ ಲಕ್ಷ ಬೆಲೆ ಬಾಳುವ ಕಲಾಕೃತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಅಕ್ಷರಶಃ ಕೆಡಿಸುವ ಅಪಾಯ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದೆ. ವೆಂಕಟಪ್ಪ ಚಿತ್ರಶಾಲೆಯನ್ನು ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಬೇಕಾದ ಪುರಾತತ್ವ, ಸಂಗ್ರಹಾಲಯಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಪರಂಪರೆ ಇಲಾಖೆ (Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage) ಈ ಆರೋಪಕ್ಕೆ ಖಡಾಖಂಡಿತ ಗುರಿಯಾಗಿದೆ.

ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ಫಂಗಸ್ ಬಂದಿರುವ ಕಲಾಕೃತಿಗಳ ಸಂರಕ್ಷಣೆ ಇನ್ನಾರು ಮಾಡಬೇಕು? ನವೀಕರಣವಾಗಿ ಮೂರು ತಿಂಗಳು ಕಳೆಯುವುದರೊಳಗೇ ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಪ್ರದರ್ಶಿತ ಕಲಾಕೃತಿಗಳು ಫಂಗಸ್ ಬಂದು ಕೆಡುವ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಗೆ ತಲುಪುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂದಾದರೆ ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಯಾರ ನಿರ್ಲಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಕಾರಣ? ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಉತ್ತರಿಸುವವರು ಯಾರು? ಈ ಇಲಾಖೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳುವವರು ಕೇಳುವವರು ಯಾರು ಇಲ್ಲವೆ? ಫಂಗಸ್ ಹಿಡಿದ ಕಲಾಕೃತಿಗಳ ನಿರ್ವಹಣೆಯ ವೆಚ್ಚ ಯಾರು ಹೊತ್ತುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ? ಇಂತಹ ಹತ್ತಾರು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳು ಕಾಡುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಈ ದುರವಸ್ಥೆಗೆ ಕಾರಣ ಯಾರು ಎನ್ನುವುದನ್ನು ಘನತೆವೆತ್ತ ಸರ್ಕಾರವನ್ನು ಕೇಳದೆ ಇನ್ನಾರನ್ನು ಕೇಳೋಣ? ಸರ್ಕಾರವೇ ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಉತ್ತರಿಸಬೇಕು.

Fungus ಹೇಗೆ ಬಂದಿವೆ ಎನ್ನುವುದನ್ನು ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು ಈ ಇಲಾಖೆಯ ಸಚಿವರು ಗಮನಿಸಲಿ. ತನಿಖೆ ನಡೆಸಲಿ. ಗ್ಯಾಲರಿಯ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿ ಹೊತ್ತಿರುವ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ನೀವೇನು ಕ್ರಮ ಕೈಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೀರಿ? ಕಲಾವಲಯಕ್ಕೆ ಉತ್ತರಿಸುವಂತಹ ಉತ್ತರದಾಯಿತ್ವ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮೇಲಿದೆ. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ನೀವೇ ಉತ್ತರಿಸಬೇಕು ಈಗ. ಕಾರಣ ಈ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಕಲಾವಿದರ ಕಲಾಕೃತಿಗಳು ಈ ನಾಡಿನ ಆಸ್ತಿ. ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಮೌಲ್ಯಯುತವಾದವು. ಈ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಾವೂ ತಿಳಿದಿರುತ್ತೀರಿ ಎಂದು ಭಾವಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ. ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು ನಿರ್ಲಕ್ಷಿಸದೆ ಕ್ರಮ ಕೈಗೊಳ್ಳಿ. ನನ್ನಂತಹ ನೂರಾರು ಕಲಾವಿದರು ಇಂತಹ ಮೇರು ಕಲಾವಿದರ ಕೃತಿಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ಕಲಿತಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಈ ಕಲಾಕೃತಿಗಳು ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶನ ಮಾಡಿವೆ.

ನಾಡಿನ ಹಿರಿಯ ಕಲಾವಿದರಾದ ವರ್ಣಶಿಲ್ಪಿ ವೆಂಕಟಪ್ಪ ಅವರಲ್ಲಿ, ಕೆ.ಕೆ.ಹೆಬ್ಬಾರ್ ಅವರಲ್ಲಿ ‘ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಕ್ಷಮಿಸಿ ಬಿಡಿ’ ಎಂದು ಕರಜೋಡಿಸಿ ಬೇಡದೆ ಬೇರಿನ್ನಾವ ಅವಕಾಶವೂ ನನಗಂತೂ ಕಾಣಿಸುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಮಾನ್ಯ ಸಚಿವರು ಇದನ್ನೆಷ್ಟು ಗಂಭೀರವಾಗಿ ಪರಿಗಣಿಸುತ್ತಾರೋ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಕಡೇ ಪಕ್ಷ ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿಗಳು, ಉಪಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿಗಳಾದರೂ ಈ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಗಮನಕೊಟ್ಟರೆ ನಾವು ಧನ್ಯ.

ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ವಿಚಾರವನ್ನೂ ಪ್ರಸ್ತಾಪಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ.

ವೆಂಕಟಪ್ಪ ಚಿತ್ರಶಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಲಾವಿದರ ಪ್ರದರ್ಶನಕ್ಕೆಂದು ಮಾಡಲಾದ ಮೂರು ಗ್ಯಾಲರಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಬಾಡಿಗೆ ನಿಗದಿಗೊಳಿಸುವ ಕೆಲಸ ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಆಗದಿರುವುದು ದುರದೃಷ್ಟಕರ ಸಂಗತಿ. ಉದ್ಘಾಟನೆಯ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಗ್ಯಾಲರಿ 1ರಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿರಿಯ ಕಲಾವಿದರಾದ ರುಮಾಲೆ ಚೆನ್ನಬಸವಯ್ಯ ಅವರ ಕಲಾಕೃತಿಗಳ ಪ್ರದರ್ಶನ ಏರ್ಪಡಿಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಇನ್ನುಳಿದ ಗ್ಯಾಲರಿಗಳನ್ನು ಖಾಲಿ ಖಾಲಿಯಾಗಿಟ್ಟು ಉದ್ಘಾಟಿಸಿದ್ದೂ ಆಯಿತು. ಚಿತ್ರಶಾಲೆಯ ಮೊದಲ ಮಹಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ವೆಂಕಟಪ್ಪ ಅವರ ಕಲಾಕೃತಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಅವರು ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸಿದ ವಸ್ತುಗಳ ಸಂಗ್ರಹಾಲಯವನ್ನಾಗಿ ಪರಿವರ್ತಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. 2ನೇ ಮಹಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿರಿಯ ಕಲಾವಿದರಾದ ಕೆ.ಕೆ.ಹೆಬ್ಬಾರ್ ಅವರ ಕಲಾಕೃತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರದರ್ಶಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಇವೆರಡೂ ಸಂಗ್ರಹಾಲಯವನ್ನಾಗಿ ಪರಿವರ್ತಿಸಲಾಗಿರುವ ವಿಚಾರ ನಿಮಗೆಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ತಿಳಿದಿದೆ. ಈ ಎರಡೂ ಗ್ಯಾಲರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರದರ್ಶಿತ ಕಲಾಕೃತಿಗಳಿಗೆ fungus ಬಾಧಿಸುತ್ತಿವೆ.

ಇದನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ನೋಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಯಾರನ್ನು ನೇಮಕ ಮಾಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. Fungus ಕಲಾಕೃತಿಗಳ ಮುಂಭಾಗದಲ್ಲೇ ಈ ಪ್ರಮಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿವೆ ಎಂದಾದರೆ ಕಲಾಕೃತಿಗಳ ಹಿಂಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಇನ್ನೆಷ್ಟಿರಬಹುದು. ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದವರು ಈ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಗಮನ ಹರಿಸಿ. ಬೆಲೆಬಾಳುವ ಕಲಾಕೃತಿಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಲಕ್ಷ್ಯದಿಂದ ಕೆಡಿಸಬೇಡಿ.

I’m writing this with a very heavy heart. Please forgive us Mr. Varnashilpi K.Venkatappa and Mr. Padma Bhushan K.K. Hebbar.

There seems to be no other way than helplessly watching the state of Venkatappa Art Gallery which was renovated and opened for public in the absence of artists about two and half months ago. In another 10 days, it completes three months. The saddest part is that most of the art works that are exhibited have developed mold/fungus on them. The artworks that are worth millions are in the verge of destruction. The Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage, which is responsible for managing the gallery, is absolutely and directly to blame for.

What should be done to preserve the art works which have already caught mold on them? If within three months of renovation, the displayed works of art reach a state of fungus and deterioration, then whose negligence is it? Who will answer this? Who will bear the cost of the artwork? There are many such questions. If the honourable government cannot answer this, who else will? The government must answer.

What action will you take against the authorities who are responsible? You have the responsibility to answer the art fraternity. The artworks of Varnashilpi K. Venkatappa and Padma Bhushan K.K. Hebbar are national treasures, and it’s our responsibility to preserve them. Many artists like me have grown up watching and learning from these two stalwart artists. I hope you are aware of this fact and please take necessary action to prevent such disasters. Let there be an enquiry about the development of fungus and the ministers of the department observe them with due diligence.

We are ashamed of what has happened and we can only whole heartedly pray artists Venkatappa and K.K Hebbar for forgiveness. On behalf of all the artists, I gently request the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister to consider this matter seriously and take necessary actions before there is further damage.

I would like to draw your attention to another aspect here. In the three galleries that are allotted for exhibition in the ‘Venkatappa Chitrashale’, the rent has not been yet fixed. During the inauguration, an exhibition of the works of veteran artist Rumale Chennabasaviah was held at Gallery 3. However, the rest of the galleries remained empty and was inaugurated. The first floor of the gallery has been converted into a museum of Venkatappa’s works and the materials he used. On the second floor, K. K. Hebbar’s works are displayed. You all know that both of them have been converted into museums. The artworks in both of these are now fungi infested.

Who is responsible for all this? If the fungus appears on the front of the artwork, there may be more on the back of the artwork. This needs immediate attention and action to preserve the paintings. It is my humble request to please look into the matter as urgent and take necessary action to preserve the art works.
